Sunday School

A recent post at Kingdom of Heathen found me digging up a cheat sheet I compiled a while ago about the Bible's view on women. Christian feminists, this is for you.

BIBLE VERSES ON WOMEN (a short summary):

OLD TESTAMENT:

"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." – Genesis 3:16

"Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, an do ye to them as is good in your eyes." – Genesis 19:8

"And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire." – Leviticus 21:9

"If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city." – Deuteronomy 22:23-24 (But it's okay in the countryside.)

NEW TESTAMENT:

"...The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man." – 1 Corinthians 11:3

"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak.... And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home." - 1 Corinthians 14:34-35

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord." - Ephesians 5:22

"Let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing." – Ephesians 5:24

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands." - Colossians 3:18

"I will ... that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array." – 1 Timothy 2:9

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." – 1 Timothy 2:11-12

"Teach the young women to be ... obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed." – Titus 2:4-5

"Wives, be in subjection to your own husbands." – 1 Peter 3:1

Sweeet...

I love looking at the Bible and wondering about how totally out of date it is. Stupid sexist King James version...

And every other version for that matter.

Are you saying that telling women to not have sex before marriage and dress modestly is bad? And for those other verses telling women to not speak out in chirch and to submit to their husbands also shows that the bible is Breligious books, as well as a history book. Also note that the Bible is insipred by God, but written by man, and as we all know, nobody is perfect.

That is kind of srewed up, but what do you expect, coming from the Bible. I actually agree with the woman's head in the man thing.

That's pretty cool, and Bobkul, it actually never says in the bible not to have premarital sex, or not any verses that I'm aware of. That that quote tells women not to have premarital sex isn't true, it tells them not to cheat on their betrothed.

Bobkul - No I'm not. Your simplifying the meaning of the verses. What do you mean by saying "those other verses telling women to not speak out in chirch and to submit to their husbands also shows that the bible is religious books"?

yeah. What do you mean by it? how does telling women not to speak out in chruch make it a religious book or a history book.

So basicly your saying women are inferior to men. What if I agreed with the fact that women are infearior to men... when it comes to agreasion, hunting, gathering etc. all the things men have to do to keep their families provided and cared for. Can a man nurture and care for a child as a woman? Can a man keep house, cook, all the things a woman does on a regular basis? About the one quote about the man being the head of a woman, the man may be the head but the woman is the neck and she can turn the head any way she wants to. About not cheating on your betrothed, when you are married arn't you married to your betrothed thus he still your bertrohted.
Sorry about any spelling mistakes

Why do you mean you don't get it, Pyro?? You know that women didn't have equal rights for most of the history of mankind, and this is telling us that.

Oh and 'Anonymous', I don't think that I'm getting your point, but women and men are both completely capable of everything you just said, thy just do it differently.

Um...Bobkul, do woman really need all the rights as men becasue with rights come responcibilies. Oh so guys are capable of caring for a child at an early age where they require patience, understanding and constant care? Exuse me but every guy I have ever met does not have the incredalbe patience a woman does for a child's needs. Secondly your saying that a woman can provide and protect their family just as well as a man can on a regular basis. Um...I think NOT! Women do not have tesoserone (or how ever you spell it) makes boys and men agressive and competive. By the way before I write any more could you explain what you mean by: (and I quote)
"...I don't think that I am getting your point..."

They seem more like commands to me, Bobkul. But I guess there are plenty of ways you can interpret them.

Anon - I am NOT saying Women are inferior to men. I'm saying the BIBLE says that they are.

It is so simply obvious that 'history' itself, in any books, even in the accounts of those still alive to tell us about it is never projected in truth. Psychology - not theories of, but tested scientific brain scans with real data - has told us that not one of us is capable of recording history in its exact. So the bible could never be history, even if you did believe it in.

As far as i'm concerned, if God is real, and still knocking around, he should get some modern men and women to write a new bible, because lets face it - what modern western woman, with access to all the knowledge we have access to, in her right and sane mind would want to believe in this creed. Even worse - indoctrinate such misogynistic beliefs that deny women the control and love of their own bodies into their own daughters.

I could never do that to any child with respect to them and with the teachings of the bible i could never hope that they could respect themselves.

Moreover - Grimm's fairytales actually has more fundamentally established moral codes of conduct for men and women than the bible ever will have. If i were to teach my children by any book it would be one that accepts its own fallacies.

History indeed.
